Usually on Christmas Day, there is an abundance of photographs of the British royals collectively making their way to the church to attend the 11 AM service at Sandringham property in Norfolk. However, like all of us this year, the Queen and her grandchildren are experiencing a completely different type of Christmas and the day will be celebrated separately and behind closed doors.
In the absence of any public appearances, Clarence House released a new portrait of Prince Charles and Camilla to celebrate Christmas. It was taken by one of the employees in BirchallScotland, earlier this year, the couple are shown dressed in casual clothes and holding walking sticks in front of the camera. The prince is smiling broadly and has binoculars around his neck. The Duchess wears jeans. Back in July, she revealed during an interview with BBC Radio 5 that she was „very happy“ to wear denim this year. She told host Emma Barnett, „I’ve been so happy with my jeans. It’s going to be very difficult to get them out again. I think you’re into some kind of lifestyle, right?“
The photo was taken earlier this year in Scotland, but today Charles and Camilla spend Christmas together in The Prince’s residence in Gloucestershire Highgrove. The Duchess was also hoping to see her children and grandchildren during the holidays if restrictions allowed, and the couple also indicated earlier this year that they might make a socially distant visit to the Queen and Prince Philip who are spending Christmas quietly in Windsor Castle. Cambridge is currently in Their home in Norfolk, Unearth Hall.
Like all families across the UK, members of the royal family are under strict restrictions during the holidays due to the increased spread of COVID-19 and confirmation of a new strain believed to be more contagious. The British government had initially said that up to three families could meet indoors for five days during the holiday period, but changed the rules with less than a week remaining until Christmas. The country is now divided into layers with London and the southeast facing the toughest restrictions, which for the most part mean no family mixing at all even on Christmas Day. In other areas, three families are still allowed to meet, but only on Christmas Day itself.
However, one of the royal traditions that will continue as usual is the Queen’s Christmas broadcast, which is pre-recorded and will be broadcast on the nation at 3 PM in the UK today. She rarely participates in TV broadcasts outside of this, but earlier this year she addressed the nation unforgettably at the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
